Siobhan O'Rourke
I help people over 45 discover the joy of social dance across Ireland's coastal towns — through kizomba, salsa, and authentic community connection.
How It All Started
I wasn't always a dance person. At 31, I was working in theatre production — solid job, decent pay, but something felt missing. Then one evening in Temple Bar, Dublin, I wandered into a casual salsa social. The music was infectious. The energy was real. And within 20 minutes, someone had invited me onto the floor and suddenly I was moving in ways I'd never imagined.
That single evening changed everything. I realised dance wasn't about being young or graceful or having the "right" body. It was about connection. It was about joy. So I went back. And kept going back. After completing my Contemporary Dance degree at the University of Limerick in 2010 — yes, I was studying while working — I knew this was my real direction.
In 2015, I started hosting kizomba socials in Dún Laoghaire. We began with 12 people meeting in a small community hall. Within two years, we were drawing 80-100 dancers every week. The demand was clear. There weren't quality social dance spaces for people over 45 in Ireland. So I built them.
That's been my focus for nearly a decade now. Creating welcoming, respectful spaces where mature dancers can learn, move, and connect. From Dublin's themed nights to Cork's coastal gatherings to Dún Laoghaire's beachside socials — each event reflects the same belief: movement belongs to everyone, at every age.

How I Work
Movement Isn't Just Technique
I believe dance is fundamentally about connection — with yourself, with your partner, with the music, and with the community around you. Yes, technique matters. Good footwork, proper frame, rhythmic accuracy — they all matter. But they're not the point. They're the foundation for something deeper.
When I teach or write about dance, I'm not just describing steps. I'm explaining how movement creates belonging. How the right social space can transform someone's confidence. How music can reach people in ways words never could.
Accessibility Over Exclusion
Social dance shouldn't be intimidating. It shouldn't require years of experience or a "good body" or youth. I've built my entire practice around removing barriers — beginner-friendly nights, patient instruction, genuine welcome from experienced dancers, venues that are accessible and comfortable.
That's why I focus on the over-45 community. This age group gets overlooked in dance spaces. People assume they're too late to start. They're not. They're often the most motivated, thoughtful, and engaged learners I meet.
Honest, Practical Guidance
In my writing, I don't sugarcoat things. Some dance nights in Ireland are genuinely good. Others aren't. Some venues are accessible; others have real barriers. I tell the truth because dancers deserve to make informed choices about where they spend their time and energy.
Movement isn't about being perfect. It's about being alive. That's what I've learned, and that's what I want everyone to experience.
